The Society for Creative Anachronism is an organization dedicated to the study and recreation of the life, art, and culture of the Middle Ages. The society was founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California, and has since grown to include chapters throughout the United States and in other parts of the world.
Donald Brown, the creator of Eamon, was a member in the late 1970s of the Des Moines, Iowa-based chapter of the society known as the Barony of Coeur d'Ennui, founded in 1978 by Brown's friend Bill Fesselmeyer and Bill's wife Sherry. The role-playing elements of the society, as well as the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons which Fesselmeyer introduced to his friend, may have influenced Brown's creation of the Medieval-themed Eamon.
